There’s something about that first little hint of cooler weather that makes me excited to pull out my favorite layers. One piece I always reach for when the temperatures start to drop is a good cardigan. They’re comfortable, easy to wear, and one of those pieces that can completely change an outfit without making you feel like you’re trying too hard.
Cardigans have definitely become more than just something you throw on when you’re cold. There are so many different styles right now, from classic button-down cardigans to oversized versions, cropped silhouettes, cozy knits, and even cardigans with fun details that make them feel like the main part of your outfit. The best part is that they’re incredibly easy to work into your everyday wardrobe.
The Classic Cardigan And Jeans
You really can’t go wrong with a cardigan and your favorite pair of jeans. It’s one of those outfits that works for just about everything, whether you’re running errands, heading to lunch, taking the kids somewhere, or just want an easy outfit for the day. Try pairing a fitted cardigan with straight-leg or wide-leg jeans for a simple, pulled-together look. You can button it up and wear it as a top, or leave it open over a simple tank or tee. Add sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots depending on the weather and you’re ready to go.

Wear Your Cardigan As A Top
One of my favorite ways to style a cardigan is to button it all the way up and wear it as a top. This works especially well with a slightly cropped or fitted cardigan paired with high-rise denim, trousers, or a skirt. It’s such an easy way to make a cardigan feel a little more polished without adding another layer. You can also play around with how many buttons you fasten depending on the neckline and the look you want.

Oversized Cardigans For Cozy Days
When comfort is the priority, an oversized cardigan is the answer. I love throwing a chunky cardigan over a simple tee and jeans because it feels cozy without looking like you’re wearing loungewear. The key with an oversized cardigan is to balance the proportions. If your cardigan is really oversized, try wearing it with a straighter or slimmer bottom. Or, if you’re wearing wide-leg jeans, choose a cardigan that has a little more structure instead of something extremely bulky.

Cardigans With Skirts and Dresses
Another easy combination for fall is a cardigan with a skirt. Try a fitted cardigan with a flowy midi skirt or dress for a feminine look, or pair an oversized cardigan with a mini skirt and boots for something a little more casual. I also love the idea of playing with textures here. A soft knit cardigan with denim, suede, leather, or a flowy fabric gives the outfit a little more interest without needing a lot of accessories.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Color
If your fall wardrobe tends to lean toward black, brown, cream, and denim, a colorful cardigan is such an easy way to add some personality. You don’t have to completely change your wardrobe to embrace color. One bright cardigan can make a simple jeans-and-tee outfit feel completely different. Look for colors you already love and pair them with basics you know you’ll wear. A colorful cardigan can be the statement piece while the rest of the outfit stays simple.

Make It Work For Your Everyday Life
The thing I love most about cardigans is that they don’t require you to completely rethink your wardrobe. Chances are you already have jeans, tees, dresses, skirts, and sneakers in your closet. Adding a cardigan gives those pieces a whole new life as the weather starts to cool down. You can keep it casual with jeans and sneakers, dress it up with trousers and loafers, wear it over a dress, or make it cozy with an oversized knit.
